As told to JOHN EHAB
Developed from interviews done in the Middle East, Europe, and America, Backpack Full of Fear contains the true stories of 20 youths who left a war-torn Syria for better lives. Some of them crossed the dangerous waters of the Mediterranean Sea in overcrowded, sinking boats. Others, pursued by police, made their way on foot through dense, dark forests. Throughout their perilous journeys, smugglers and kidnappers exploited their situations to turn a profit, and armed militias threatened to take their lives.
ULF BJÖRE
Ulf Björe was one of our early Airbnb Guests from Sweden, who we had the opportunity to get to know during his visit to Monterey. Ulf gave us some copies of his book of photography from a trip to Cuba to help us fundraise for our book about Syrian refugees, Backpack Full of Fear. He also helped connect us to hosts in Sweden when we traveled to interview for the book. Please feel free to take one of Ulf’s books for a donation of $15 or more.
JOHN EHAB
This bilingual collection of poetry explores themes of displacement, emotional tension, and the bridging of incompatible worlds, mapping physical journeys from a coffee break in Berlin to a funeral in Cairo. John Ehab composes his poetry in both English and Arabic, navigating the contrasting spaces of his experiences through a journey of pain, longing, and hope.
FR. MATTHEW THE POOR
Abouna (Father) Matta El-Meskeen (1919-2006) — “Matthew the Poor” in English — was an ascetic monk and abbot of the Monastery of St. Macarius the Great in Egypt. In this brief treatise, written primarily for a monastic audience, Fr. Matthew outlines the process of putting the "old man" to death and becoming truly alive in Christ, offering a concrete roadmap for authentic spiritual life. Fr. Matthew's powerful words can help us on our journey of, as St. Seraphim of Sarov says, "acquiring the Holy Spirit."
